Ron reading to children during I Love To Read Month
Ron Schuler is first and foremost a family man, and is very proud of his 3 young children, Brigitta, Stefan and Corina. In addition to raising his family and being active in the community and Church, Ron founded a family-run catalogue sales business, which has been successful for over 15 years.
A University of Manitoba graduate with a degree in International Relations, Ron is also an independent businessperson, who co-owned several successful businesses. The foundations for his successful business ventures were laid during his time as a junior executive at the T. Eaton Company.
Ron is an active community volunteer, giving his time to a number of worthy efforts including Big Brothers, Citizens on Patrol, Citizens Against Impaired Driving, the Kidney Foundation of Manitoba, Max Reinhardt Theatre Canada, the Folk Arts Council, the German Canadian Heritage Foundation and the Manitoba Inter-cultural Council.
Ron began his political career in October 1995 when he was elected school board trustee. For 4 years, he keenly and ably represented taxpayers, parents and students in his position as trustee for the River East School Division.
During his first term on the River East School Board, Ron served as Chairman of the Education and Policy Committee. He took a tough stand on violence by advocating a zero-tolerance policy on issues affecting the safety of students and staff. He thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of leading this committee, and strongly supported increased technology funding and division-wide upgrades to classroom computers. Furthermore, Ron strongly supported heritage language programs offered in the division, especially encouraging increased Spanish instruction in high schools.
His efforts were well recognized, and he was re-elected as a trustee in 1998. Ron’s abilities and experience led to his appointment to serve as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, an experience he values and remembers as one of the most rewarding learning opportunities of this lifetime. Ron will fondly remember his colleagues and staff from the River East School Division.
With some regret, Ron resigned from his position as trustee in 1999 to pursue his career in provincial politics with the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba.
Ron was first elected Member of the Legislative Assembly for the constituency of Springfield on September 21, 1999. During his first term, Gary Filmon, then leader of the party, appointed Ron as the PC Caucus Labour & Immigration Critic.
Following a successful first term, the people of Springfield and East St Paul re-elected Ron as their MLA on June 3, 2003. Since then, Stuart Murray has also appointed Ron as the Critic for Energy, Science and Technology and Chief Critic for the Kyoto Accord, the Civil Service Commission and, as of 2005, Lotteries and Gaming.
In his time at the Legislature, Ron has quickly earned a reputation as an effective parliamentarian and a strong advocate for his constituents. His years of experience in public education and the business community, as well as his many volunteer efforts serve his constituents well. Ron is our voice for our community!
